A detailed 14 karat gold Art Nouveau pendant with stylized Iris flowers and open metal work by Krementz & Co. American, circa 1900's. Irises were among the favorite plants of the Art Nouveau period, becoming almost emblematic of the movement. The flowers were easily converted into abstract or symbolic shapes and were ideally suited to the Art Nouveau style. Irises intrigued the artistic minds of the era because they were important in antiquity, folklore, medicine and magic. Artists loved showing the variety of color, form, and style in its realism and abstraction. Primary symbolism of the iris includes: faith, hope, wisdom, courage and admiration.
